Professional Qualification

Peter is a corporate strategic planning, strategy execution, Balanced Scorecard and performance management expert with global and regional experience. He is reputed for his pragmatic approach to the development of strategic plans and successful implementation of the Balanced Scorecard in complex situations.

Peter, who was trained by and continues to work closely with the co-creator of the Balanced Scorecard system, Dr. Robert Kaplan of Harvard Business School, is one of Africa’s leading experts in strategic planning, strategy implementation, change management, corporate performance management, leadership development and performance management.

Peter holds an MBA from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, USA, where he made it onto the US National Dean’s List of Honour Students for outstanding academic achievement. He is a Certified Public Secretary and holds an unbroken record at the Kenya Accountants and Secretarial National Examination Board (KASNEB) as a four-time highest scoring student in the country.

Peter is the author of four bestselling books on strategic planning, strategy execution, performance management and the Balanced Scorecard in both the public and private sectors.

Earlier Career

Peter worked at Stanbic Bank Group, Nairobi, from July 2001 to October 2003 as the Head of Finance and Strategy. In this role, he assisted the Managing Director in various strategic functions including strategic planning, performance management, board reporting, head office reporting, bank performance analysis and presentations.

Peter participated in the main Board of Directors meetings as the Company Secretary and Head of Finance. He implemented the Balanced Scorecard performance management system at Stanbic Bank, an act that saw the bank turn around its fortunes from loss to profit in only 12 months.

From January 2000 to June 2001, Peter worked at Polaroid Corporation, Boston, USA, as a Senior Financial Consultant in the Global Marketing Group and Corporate Internet Division. He provided complete financial support to the Global Marketing Division, Internet Division and Polaroid Digital Solutions Inc.

As Business Development and Country Manager at 3M Kenya from August 1998 to January 2000, Peter increased sales of the subsidiary to US$5.0 million in a depressed economy that reported only 1% GDP growth.

Before joining 3M Kenya, Peter worked at 3M Company, St. Paul, USA, as a Senior Financial Analyst and Business Unit Controller in the Financial Controller’s Division from June 1997 to August 1998. He was responsible for operational accounting and financial consulting for three business units and two manufacturing plants located in Massachusetts and Illinois.

In the early 1990s, Peter worked as a Senior Accountant at Coopers & Lybrand, now PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
